Basic handling skills test (BHST)

Basic handling skills test (BHST) – Learner licence – 1.5 hours
To enrol on this course, you must have recent experience gained on a manual motorcycle with a clutch and gears. You must be competent moving off in a straight line consistently without frequent stalls, moving off at right angles consistently without frequent stalls, changing gears, riding a series of curves, and braking to a stop.
If the above does not describe your abilities, then you should enrol on a Learner rider course first. If you are in any doubt, then please contact us to discuss.
We provide a well-maintained motorcycle, helmet, jacket, and gloves if you don’t have your own (included in the cost).
The BHST course covers:
- Familiarisation with the motorbike and controls
- Up to one hour’s professional friendly training to prepare you for the BHST.
- Basic handling skills test and issue of NZTA certificate upon successful completion.
- Debrief and friendly, helpful advice on progressing further including buying a bike and riding gear.
Following successful completion, you will then need to take the certificate to a licencing agent where you will need to sit the motorcycle theory test and pass an eyesight check. You will then be issued with a Class 6L Learner licence. At this point you can put an ‘L’ plate on any learner approved motorcycle (LAMS) and ride on a public road.
You can practice the theory test here:

This NZTA video will familiarise you with what is required for the Basic handling skills test.
